Lough Boora Parklands

Located in Co. Offaly, the parklands were created from a former peat bog and have since been transformed with beautiful sculptures, lakes and walking trails.

I grew up five minutes away from Lough Boora Parklands, visiting almost every week. A testament to the natural beauty of the midlands, the parklands are home to a variety of wildlife with miles-long walking trails, allowing visitors to explore to stunning scenery.

The sculptures at Lough Boora are a key feature of the park and only add to the already captivating landscape. Made by both Irish and international artists, the sculptures blend in with the natural surroundings to provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of the towns and cities. Many of them or been recycled from old equipment and machinery from its bog days. A lot of them represent the environment in which they are in, telling stories through their composition.

The stiking and impressive ‘Skytrain’ was once a fully functioning train, used to transport peat all across the area. It has been preserved and now sits proudly on a hill within the parklands, becoming an iconic symbol of the breathtaking landscape.
